Paint on Wood and Cold Porcelain Flowers

Since the age of three, I have been enchanted by art and music, a passion that deepened with the arrival of my baby. Singing lullabies reignited my love for melodies, leading to the creation of my “Musical Compass” series, which encourages viewers to explore their imagination as language fades, leaving behind shapes, colours, and sounds that enhance our experiences.

One of the pieces, “Musical Compass - 16th and 32nd rests”, doubles as a vase and invites reflection. Hand-painted in soft powder blue and nature-inspired hues, it symbolises musical rests, gently reminding us to breathe in nature's beauty and exhale tranquility. This Cuddles Under the Eave”, which features 13 hanging money trees that evoke our shared experience of lockdown during the global health crisis at Art Basel 2021. Both of our works embody themes of stillness and interdependence, highlighting the significance of connection during times of isolation.

Reflecting on my transformative visit to Berlin over a decade ago, I am excited to showcase “Musical Compass” at the Discovery Art Fair Frankfurt—my first exhibition in Western Europe! I am also truly grateful for the opportunity to present my work at the upcoming Art Expo Lisbon in the Cordoaria Nacional.

Influenced by Kandinsky, my piece titled "Hear the Silent Flowers Sing" delves into the vibrant intersection of abstraction and music. Here, colour acts as a lively keyboard, evoking deep emotional resonance, inspired by the beautifully painted Azulejo tiles of Portugal and Spain. Crafted from painted wood and handmade cold porcelain dancing orchids, this sculpture highlights the significance of blank spaces in our lives.

These empty moments—whether a gap in our busy schedules, a pause on a park bench for reflection, or simply allowing ourselves time to rest—are essential for our well-being. Embracing blank spaces holds profound meaning in Chinese art and music, encapsulated in the idea of “無始無終,” emphasising a focus on one’s being within an eternal space. I look forward to sharing this journey of sound and silence with you all in Europe!
